Cocos nucifera or Coconuts is one of the chief crops grown across the world. The entire coconut tree is useful and there are various products derived from this plant. 10. UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA
This Eastern African country located to the east of the Indian Ocean grows about 25 million coconut palms are cultivated on approximately 252,000 ha. The coconut palm is an important perennial cash and subsistence oil crop along the coastal belt of Tanzania. This crop supports the livelihood of more than 300,000 rural people. The Government of Tanzania decided to initiate the National Coconut Development Programme (NCDP) in 1979 with the mandate to promote coconut production and utilization, and to improve the productivity of the coconut sector in the country. The inception of the NCDP marked the beginning of the process of institutionalizing coconut R&D in the country, which led to the establishment of the Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute (MARI) in 1996.
9. PAPUA NEW GUINEA
An Oceanic country located to the north of Australia, Copra Plantations in New Guinea have been cultivated since the late 19th century. Originally established by German colonialists, they were later developed by Australian interests following World War II .It is a major source of food and export earnings, and is used for research into germplasm prospection and collection, breeding, embryo culture and agronomy. Located south-east of the Carrabiean Sea,Coconuts not being one of the native crops of the country has a huge impact on its economy. According to figures published in December 2009 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, it is the world’s seventh largest producer of coconuts, producing 1,246,400 tonnes in 2009.it is a wide producer of various coconut related products. From alcohol to sweet desserts this fruit is used in various parts of the Mexican house-hold.
Coconut production contributes to the national economy of Vietnam. Various products like desiccated coconuts, coir rope, shell charcoal, coconut fibre, coconut milk, coconut carpet are exported. According to the Food and Agricultural organization of the UN it produces about
1,246,400 tonnes of coconuts in 2009.There was even a coconut religion in Vietnam where a coconut monk had to consume only coconuts and drink only coconut milk. This was later abolished by the government.

With a coastline of 7,491 km, Brazil is known for its coconut palms and its sandy beaches. The economy of this country is mainly agro-based and there are various companies established for this very purpose. 4. SRI LANKA
Situated closer to the peninsula of India, Sri Lanka is the producer of 12% of the world’s coconuts. With cooler and more temperate climate, it has monsoon through out the year and coconut trees are found in abundance. According to the Food and Agricultural organization of the UN it produces about 2,099,000 tonnes of coconuts in 2009.About 395,000 hectares of land has coconut farms with a production of 2,500 million nuts per year.

It is the largest producer of Palm oil in the world. According to the Food and Agricultural organization of the UN it produces about 21,565,700 tonnes of coconuts in 2009.P.T.
