She was born on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey to Mary Wolf Wilkinson and Harry William Streep Jr. Her mother was a commercial artist and art editor and her father were a pharmaceutical executive.
Harry William Streep Jr. Was of German and Swiss ancestry and Mary Wolf Wilkinson was of English, German and Irish ancestry. Streep was also a distant relative of William Penn who founded Pennsylvania and her family was one of the first purchasers of the land in this state.
Meryl’s mother was her inspiration and strength. Meryl was an introvert and her mother encouraged her to do anything she wanted to. Whenever Meryl was in need of confidence, she used to contact her mother for advice.She completed her high school in Bernardsville. At the age of 12, she sang at a school recital and liked to show off in front of the camera. She didn’t take acting seriously although she was part of plays in her high school until she played in Miss Julie at Vassar College in 1969.
Meryl is a natural actor, she was not taught to act by anyone. She also mimicked accents which helped her learn different accents. She did her MFA from Yale School of Drama in 1975. Later she earned a Doctorate of Arts Degree in 1981.
Although she had enacted various plays, she first appeared in public theater in 1975 in Trelawny of the Wells. She made her film debut in 1977 in the movie Julia. She made her breakthrough in her film The Deer Hunter in 1978. She also won the best-supporting-actress award at Golden Globe in 1978 and few more awards in 1979. She rose to stardom in the 80’s. She found more success after her drama Sophie’s Choice in 1982. During 90’s Streep found a downturn in her career, but during late 90s she made a comeback with her movie Marvin’s Room in 1996. She had a commercial success after her movie The Devil Wears Prada (2006). After a series of more successful movies, in 2016, she appeared as the main competition jury president at the 66th Berlin International Film festival.
